Hearing Noises in Your Attic? How to Identify Rodents, Squirrels, or Raccoons by Sound
You usually hear an attic animal before you ever see it. The sound, timing, and location are the first clues to what it actually is.
Rodents
Light scratching and quick scurrying, often along wall lines or near the edges of the attic. Most active at night. Chewing sounds usually mean rodents rather than a larger animal.
Squirrels
Fast, energetic movement, mostly during the day (squirrels are diurnal), rolling or scampering sounds, and rapid scratching near the roofline or eaves.
Raccoons
Heavy, deliberate footsteps, usually at night, sometimes with low chirping or growling if there is a mother with young. Raccoons are large enough that movement is often felt as well as heard.
Why the distinction matters
Different animals need different approaches, timing (raccoons and squirrels may have young that need to be accounted for), and entry point sizes. Telling us what you are hearing and when helps us come prepared.
